About ALLIANCE

The ALLIANCE Initiative

Proposed by Lund University and its partners, the ALLIANCE initiative seeks to cultivate a new generation of scientists equipped with deep expertise in research at large and medium-scale research facilities, complemented by a broad, strategic perspective to address pressing societal challenges. Building upon the success of the HELIOS graduate school in physics and the HALRIC life-science Interreg network, ALLIANCE introduces an innovative educational model designed to train 40 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) over two four-year cycles.

A Transnational Knowledge Hub

The program is delivered through a coalition of Northern European universities and world-leading research facilities. DCs will participate in a transnational knowledge hub, selecting between two specialized training tracks: International-Academic or Industrial-Academic. The curriculum features a structured career plan, comprehensive skills development, peer networking opportunities, and mandatory secondments to partner institutions. Emphasizing interdisciplinary research, the program applies advanced methodologies from engineering and the physical sciences to critical challenges in disease diagnosis, characterization, and treatment, with the potential for profound impact across the European Union.

A Unique COFUND Doctoral Program

ALLIANCE stands out as a unique COFUND doctoral program, integrating expertise from physics to life sciences at premier research facilities and universities. The consortium provides an unparalleled international research environment, offering access to advanced light sources, synchrotron facilities, free electron lasers, laser centers, and infrastructures for data visualization, as well as micro-, nano-, and quantum material fabrication—all linked to a pilot line under the European Chips Act.

Shaping the Future of Science and Technology

The initiative aims to establish an innovative, interdisciplinary training model, leverage regional investments, and foster a new generation of broadly trained scientists poised to make significant contributions to science and technology in Europe.
